Hallertau cycle tour - a guest in the home of hops
The Hallertau hop region is known as the largest contiguous hop-growing region in the world. On more than 17,000 hectares, the hop gardens with their up to seven meter high towering hops shape the picture. It is a true paradise, especially in summer, when the gardens with their lush green characterize the unmistakable character of this area. This short cycle tour takes you along the “Holledauer Hopfentour” cycle route into the heart of the Hallertau.
Individual arrival in Bad Gögging.
The health resort Bad Gögging has a lot to offer for your physical well-being. As the only spa town in Bavaria, Bad Gögging boasts three state-approved and local natural remedies: sulfur water, mineral thermal water, and natural moor. Check-in at Hotel Centurio for 1 night.
After a hearty breakfast, the first stage of the Holledauer Hop Tour begins. Depart from the hotel and journey through Münchsmünster, the Dürnbucher Forest, and Geisenfeld to Wolnzach, home of the German Hop Museum. Here, you'll learn everything about hops, from botany to brewing beer, cultivation to the hop trade, and history to the present, presented in a descriptive and loving manner. Admission is included. The tour continues past hop gardens and idyllic villages with churches and chapels via Hüll, home to the only hop research center in the world. Further on, towards Au in der Hallertau, the route partially follows the Bockerlradweg, which traces the former route of the "Bockerl," the Hallertau local railway. Just before Reichertshausen, there is a viewing platform offering an aerial view of the hop gardens.
A brief detour to the Chapel of Maria Hilf, nestled in a wooded clearing, is recommended for this day. The origin of the chapel "Maria Hilf" dates back to 1814 when grateful parents erected a Marian image and prayed before it for the miraculous healing of their sick child. The miraculous healing quickly became known, attracting many seekers of help to pray before the beech tree with the image of Saint Mary. In 1875, a simple small chapel was built next to the beech tree.
Continue on to Au in der Hallertau and then to Gütlsdorf, and check-in at Hotel Ostermeier.
Daily distance: approx. 58 km. Approx. 520 m ascent. Approx. 350 m descent.

Check-out and drive back to Bad Gögging. The tour takes you through Volkenschwand, Pfeffenhausen, Rottenburg, Rohr, and Abensberg. Along the way, there are numerous stops with places worth seeing. A stop at Kuchlbauer in Abensberg is recommended.
The Kuchlbauer Brewery, which has had brewing rights since 1300, is one of the oldest breweries in the world. Kuchlbauer's Beer World is a cult site of beer, uniquely combining beer and art. Since 2010, the Kuchlbauer Tower, an architectural project according to the plans of the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, has attracted many thousands of visitors per year. During a guided tour (for a fee), you can experience the tower up close. Additionally, you can visit the KunstHausAbensberg (for a fee), built according to plans by Peter Pelikan. A short bike ride along the Danube Cycle Path to Kelheim is recommended. Along the way, we suggest a brief stop at the remains of the Roman fort Abusina. The cohort fort was founded in the 1st century AD and secured the northern border of Rome until AD 430 as part of the Limes. Today, it can be visited as an open-air museum. This is where the Danube Limes, newly added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2021, begins, stretching across Austria to Slovenia. In Kelheim, you have the opportunity to visit the Liberation Hall (for a fee). Commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria as a monument to the wars of liberation against Napoleon, it was erected by Friedrich von Gärtner and Leo von Klenze on the Michelsberg above the Danube. From there, you have a wonderful view of Kelheim, the Altmühltal, and the next stage along the Danube to Weltenburg. Cross the Danube to Stausacker using the Treidelfähre (bike ferry, for a fee - check schedule the day before) and bike to Weltenburg Monastery. The Weltenburg Monastery was founded by itinerant monks around the year 600, making it the oldest monastic settlement in Bavaria. Around the year 800, the abbey adopted the rules of Saint Benedict. Looking back on a rich, centuries-old history, the Weltenburg Abbey Brewery proudly bears the title of the world's oldest monastery brewery. And in the attached beer garden, you can enjoy one of the award-winning house beers.
Upon returning to the hotel, you have the afternoon to spend as you please. We recommend a visit to the Limes Therme. Your hotel, Centurio, has an underground bathrobe corridor to the spa. The Limes Therme impresses on three fronts. In addition to healing thermal mineral water, the spa delights with sulfur water and natural moor from its own extraction. This combination is unique in Bavaria. Since Roman times, many people have sworn by the healing power and effectiveness of these natural remedies.
A day pass for the Limes Therme is included for you. An evening meal is reserved for you. You can expect a 3-course menu with 2 starters and 3 main courses to choose from.
Daily distance: 39 km. Approx. 220 m ascent. Approx. 230 m descent.
