Bike Tour Hallertau - The Classic Circuit
8-day bike tour through the hop-growing region of Hallertau
Bike tour Hallertau - Home of Hops
The hop-growing region of Hallertau is known as the largest continuous hop cultivation area in the world. Planning a bike tour in Hallertau doesn't require you to be an adventurer, but be prepared for surprises as you visit this hilly landscape in the heart of Bavaria. In any case, Holledau, as the locals lovingly call their homeland, is a paradise, especially in the summer. The vast, green hop gardens shape the scenery during that time. This bike tour takes you around Hallertau along the cycle route "Holledauer Hopfentour". The stages of the Hallertau bike tour are a recommendation, and you are free to design the individual stages according to your preferences.
• Discover the Hallertau by bike
• Optional private bike tour guide
• Including luggage transportation services
• Including entry to the Limes thermal baths
• Including entry to the German Hop Museum

Day 1: Arrival - Bad Gögging
Individual arrival in Bad Gögging.
The health resort of Bad Gögging has a lot to offer for your physical well-being. As the only spa town in Bavaria, Bad Gögging boasts three state-approved and local natural remedies: sulfur water, mineral thermal water, and natural mud. Check-in at Hotel Centurio for 1 night.
Day 2: Bad Gögging – Straßhof near Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm
After a hearty breakfast, the first stage of the Holledauer Hopfentour begins. You'll cycle from the hotel through Neustadt an der Donau, Geisenfeld, and Wolnzach to Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm. Along the way, consider stopping in Wolnzach, where you'll find the German Hop Museum. Here, you can learn all about hops in a vivid and lovingly presented manner, from botany to beer brewing, from cultivation to hop trading, and from history to the present. Admission is already included. The rest of the tour takes you along a charming section of the Jakobsweg, passing hop gardens and idyllic villages with churches and chapels in Schillwitzried, Geisenfeld, Ainau, Fahlenbach, Rohrbach, and Affalterbach.
Check-in at Hotel Strasshof.
Daily distance: approx. 64 km. Approx. 460 m uphill. Approx. 310 m downhill.
Luggage service: Your luggage will be transported for you.
Day 3: Straßhof – Scheyern Monastery – Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, we recommend a challenging tour from Hotel Strasshof through Ehrensberger Holz, Ilmmünster, and Triefing to Scheyern Monastery.
The Benedictine monastic community was founded over 900 years ago at the foot of the Wendelstein in Bayrischzell and relocated to Scheyern in 1119. Since then, the monks have lived in this historically significant place, previously known as the ancestral castle of the Wittelsbach family. The monastery community operates several businesses, including the Klosterbrauerei (monastery brewery) and Klostermetzgerei (monastery butcher), as well as a tavern with a beer garden. In all their enterprises, the monastery aims to promote regional cycles.
As the return route, we recommend traveling through Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm. In 2011, it was the only German city to receive the international LivCom Award from the United Nations, and in 2013, it was awarded the German Sustainability Prize due to its ecological focus. In 2017, it hosted the Bavarian State Garden Show, and the parks and green spaces created during that time can still be enjoyed and experienced today.
Overnight at Hotel Strasshof.
Daily distance: approx. 35 km. Approx. 400 m uphill. Approx. 400 m downhill.
Day 4: Straßhof - Gütlsdorf
Breakfast at the hotel and check-out. You'll ride through Geroldshausen, Osseltshausen, Osterwaal, and Au to Gütlsdorf. This tour takes you right into the heart of Hallertau. Whether hop gardens, small streams, or shade-providing oak trees, the landscape here is distinctive. Our recommendation for the day is to take a short detour to the Chapel of Maria Hilf, nestled in a secluded clearing in the forest. The origin of the chapel "Maria Hilf" dates back to 1814 when grateful parents erected a Marian image and prayed before it for the inexplicable healing of their sick child. News of the miraculous healing spread quickly, and soon many people came to pray in front of the beech tree with the image of Saint Mary. In 1875, a simple little chapel was built next to the beech tree. Continue your ride to Gütlsdorf and check-in at Hotel Ostermeier.
Luggage service: Your luggage will be transported for you.
Daily distance: approx. 32 km. Approx. 270 m uphill. Approx. 280 m downhill.
Day 5: Gütlsdorf – Pfeffenhausen – Ratzenhofen – Gütlsdorf
Breakfast at the hotel. Today's tour is a beautiful round trip. You'll ride from Gütlsdorf via Aggstall, Pfeffenhausen, and Unterwangenbach to Schloss Ratzenhofen, a lovingly restored small gem with its own castle chapel, first mentioned in a document in 1040. Under shady chestnut trees, you can enjoy fresh beer in steins at the castle's beer garden (open seasonally on Fridays to Sundays) and listen to the brass band every Sunday afternoon. Additionally, many events from spring to autumn offer diverse entertainment. The route back takes you through Mainburg, the unofficial "capital" of Hallertau. Here, the "green gold," hops, is not only cultivated but also processed and shipped worldwide. There are many opportunities to stop and dine around the central marketplace with its historic buildings before embarking on the final stage back to Au in der Hallertau.
Stage: approx. 57 km. Approx. 310 m uphill. Approx. 310 m downhill.
Alternative Route: Gütlsdorf – Au in der Hallertau – Nandlstadt – Rudelzhausen – Gütlsdorf
A shorter panoramic tour partly follows the so-called Bockerlradweg, which follows the former route of the Hallertauer Lokalbahn "Bockerl." Just before Reichertshausen, there is a viewing platform from which you can admire a bird's-eye view of the hop gardens.
Stage: approx. 36 km. Approx. 260 m uphill. Approx. 260 m downhill.
In the evening, a visit to the Schlossbräukeller in Au in der Hallertau is worthwhile. A voucher for refreshments is already included for you.
Overnight at Hotel Ostermeier.
Day 6: Gütlsdorf – Bad Gögging
Breakfast at the hotel, check-out, and continue to Bad Gögging. The tour takes you through Volkenschwand, Pfeffenhausen, Rottenburg, Rohr, and Abensberg.
Along the way, there are numerous points of interest. We recommend making a stop at Kuchlbauer in Abensberg. The Kuchlbauer Weißbierbrauerei (wheat beer brewery), which has had brewing rights since 1300, is one of the oldest breweries in the world. Kuchlbauer's Bierwelt is a shrine to beer, uniquely combining the themes of beer and art. Since 2010, the Kuchlbauer Tower, an architectural project designed by artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, has attracted thousands of visitors each year. During a guided tour (for a fee), you can experience the tower up close. Additionally, you can visit the KunstHausAbensberg (art house) (for a fee), which was constructed according to plans by Peter Pelikan. The exhibition provides insights into the plans, works, and life of Friedensreich Hundertwasser.
Daily distance: approx. 60 km. Approx. 280 m uphill. Approx. 410 m downhill.
Check-in at Hotel Centurio for 2 nights.
Luggage service: Your luggage will be transported for you.
Day 7: Bad Gögging – Kelheim – Weltenburger Kloster – Limes-Therme
Breakfast at the hotel. Today, you have the choice of either embarking on another short bike tour or spending the day in complete relaxation. Maybe a bit of both?
We recommend taking a short bike tour along the Danube cycle path to Weltenburg and Kelheim. From Kelheim, you can take a partial trip by boat (for a fee) back to Weltenburg Monastery. This boat trip is one of Bavaria's most beautiful excursions and takes you through the Weltenburger Enge nature reserve with its impressive Danube Gorge. In 2020, it was designated as the "First National Natural Monument of Bavaria." Weltenburg Monastery was founded by wandering monks around the year 600, making it the oldest monastic settlement in Bavaria. Around the year 800, the monastery adopted the rules of Saint Benedict. Looking back on a turbulent, centuries-long history, Weltenburg Monastery proudly claims to be the world's oldest monastery brewery. You can enjoy one of their award-winning, house-brewed beers in the attached beer garden.
Daily distance: approx. 19 km. Approx. 220 m uphill. Approx. 230 m downhill.
Now it's time to do something for relaxation and health! Your Hotel Centurio has an underground bathrobe corridor leading to the Limes-Therme. The Limes-Therme impresses in three ways. In addition to healing thermal mineral water, the spa features sulfur water and natural mud from its own extraction. This combination is unique in Bavaria. Since Roman times, many people have sworn by the healing power and effectiveness of these natural remedies. We have already included a day pass for the Limes-Therme for you.
Overnight at Hotel Centurio.
Day 8: Bad Gögging - Departure
Breakfast at the hotel and check-out.
Before you depart, you have the option to use the thermal spa once more (for a fee).
